With several editing options and an easy to use interface web publishers can craft simple and complex pages quickly. For established designers and developers it's one of the few programs that shows you many hidden properties working in the DOM which makes it GREAT for building Web 2.0 sites. Once clicked, an objects style properties can be viewed and adjusted by the CSS/DOM control. Any changes made here appear in class, inline style and xhtml format ready to paste into a document or simply saved. It's been reincarnated a few times and began in 1996 as a tag based HTML source editor, loosely modelled on the then popular Hotdog HTML Editor. It operated in the browser. In 1999/2000 WYSIWYG was introduced and soon after the program was distributed in the .hta application container in use today. in 2004 the CSS/DOM control was introduced and the program GUI updated most recently mid 2010.
Quick Around the Program DOM Wizard operates in two modes - Design Mode (WYSIWYG) and Source Mode - to work directly with the source code. Top HTML Menu - Delivers HTML in Design mode and HTML tags in Source mode. Right CSS/DOM Menu - View/Update objects CSS and DOM settings. Edits are made from the HTML,CSS/DOM and Source areas. Changes made in Class, Inline or OuterHTML areas have no impact. Bottom Left File Menu - Stores pages loaded off the computer or web Class/Inline/OuterHTML containers - DOM properties formatted for class and inline style. Copy icons copies the code to your clipboard Source Button - Edit the HTML source. Right mouse click to update color scheme Keystrokes - Standard bold,italic,underline. Ctrl+L link, Ctrl+S save. See Help for full list The Filemenu (bottom left) loads docs/welcome.htm on startup and docs/untitled.htm when a blank option is selected. Altering and saving these files commits the changes. To return either to their original state delete them from the docs folder and they will be recreated next time you open the program and/or select a blank option. Bugs and Limitations - This javascript program can get buggy after long and/or intensive sesions (see Help in the program for bugs and fixes) If saving work via the program it is recommended you save all work when in Source mode. Microsoft stripped down its Dynamic Editing Component for Vista and Windows 7+ so Dom Wizard 1.0 only works on Win95 to XP. A Vista version is in progress.
